(A) Lamp-lore has it that lamps of this nature were all the rage in 1910. They were imported from Syria (and hence you find this here in the "French Floor Lamps" department -- Syria is right next door to France, huh? ) and found favor in the United States as well as Europe. It obviously was hand-made by Syrian coppersmiths and metalworkers, and openwork and exotic designs abound. This floor model is positively huge, standing 82 inches tall! The shade measures 28 1/2 inches across, and probably was lined with silk. There probably was a glass bead fringe which hung around the bottom of the shade, lending to the exotic look...
